Synopsis (From Goodreads)
What would you do if Earth didn’t have enough men?
Would you take a chance and leave the only world you knew behind?
This is the decision Faith Reid faces. Placing all her hope in a new government program, she seizes the opportunity that offers a chance for the women of Earth to find love among the stars, on a world beyond the one they know.
How many times can one man risk rejection?
Would you give up on your dreams?
Torkel Alonson has had enough of being ignored and looked over by females on his adopted home world of Enotia. His pride has suffered and he must accept the painful truth. Females will never choose a male with his evil lineage despite his honorable service to his government’s military.
Can two people looking for the same thing find not just what they want but what they need in one another?
My thoughts on Torkel’s Chosen
WARNING: This have spoilers. You’ve been warned.
Remember last week #BRMondays review of Grim by M.K. Eidem? Well, in her website she recommended Michelle Howard’s books. Guess what I did? Yeah, I got Torkel’s Chosen first and then all the A World Beyond series so far, because WoW.
Can you say SEAL’s from another planet? That’s what these warriors are. The Elite of the Elite, Jutak warriors. There are 3 teams so far and the one who you don’t want to bump in the dark is Team 3… apparently.
Torkel was a Marenian raised by Enotian parents. He is the Unit Leader and the teams are under his command. He wants to be chosen and get a female but so far, for 7 years in a row he left the Chosen Arena alone, because nobody wanted a Marenian as a mate, no matter that he was a high-ranking officer of the law.
Faith, or Faye, is a 28 years old female from Earth that got into the SP program to find love and have a family outside of her home planet. Earth was overly populated by women now and men didn’t stay with one like they used to, and that was what she wanted. So she pay the 20,000 dollar fee and got into the program.
The way this two meet was a.. how can I put it? Crazy situation? She chose him but spoke to him first, so they needed her to choose again and she did, but he misunderstood and then she was his. There, not so messy, right? You have to read it, I really enjoyed that part.
There was not a single moment of relaxation for these couple. Well… That’s a lie, there was some down time but most of the book it’s heavy with action, not only by the Jutak Warriors missions, but also because of Faye.
At one point she was taken by the Marenians, which was a really, really, fucking really bad thing. She found Lindsay with them, her friend from the trip to Enotia, that was taken too by the slave traders and was there to be sold.
What they did to Faye… *shudders* There are no words to describe it, nor the loyalty she displayed to Torkel and his team. If you have a week stomach I don’t know if this is the best book to read, because honestly the torture was something that I don’t think I would have survived.
I cried after she was safe again. I truly felt for her and what she’d been thru. It wasn’t fair what happen after she was again in Enotia, but I can understand the reactions that each warrior had to what happened before she was taken, what they’ve learned she did. She wasn’t a traitor in my opinion, she made a mistake and was protecting the man she loved the only way she knew how.
The finale for this story was perfect, left me satisfy with the couple and with some questions that made me rush to get the next book. Which I finish the day after Torkel’s Chose *laugh* Yeah, I know. I can’t help it. When I like a story I get into it fast and hard.
The writing was well done. Nothing strange in vocabulary, except for the names obviously and some bad words that were from Enotia, but the author explained those so I can’t see a problem there.
It was a book packed with movement, energy, action, intrigue, mystery, and heartache. This last one for me was one of the points that put the story higher on my ranking. Not many authors are willing to write about females being abused, and like M.K. Eidem, Michelle Howard did a great job conveying the message and the story.
Quotes
“I’m honored that you find me pleasing, Faye. I… I have longed for a woman of my own. To have a Chosen is a gift and I vow to care for you.”
Her love hadn’t kept her from jeopardizing his life or his team members. “If that’s how you love someone. I prefer you not love me.”
“I believe you because otherwise everything I witnessed between the two of you was a lie. I need to believe that decent people exist. That if Torkel could find someone to love him then so can I.”
Rating
FYI… Just as last week, I’ve already finished this series so far by the time this post it up.
I can say now that this and Kyele’s Passion are my high-ranking ones for the series.
